Surf coast secondary college homework policy
In accordance with the DET, the Surf Coast Secondary College Community believes that homework plays an important role in the academic and personal development of students, allowing students to consolidate their learning, extend core learning skills of inquiry and emphasise independent studying skills, whilst establishing patterns of behaviour preparing students for senior years of education.
Successful homework and study practices strive to strengthen the partnership between home and school and providing parents and caregivers with insights into and engagement with student learning.
Homework includes completion and/or extension of classwork, assignments, reading, revision and learning of material, whereas study primarily refers to the revision of material and content covered in classes in preparation for assessments or classes.
Homework practice can appear differently for each student, taking into account student personal needs. It should be completed to the best of the student’s ability, the quality of the work completed during homework time is important.
For senior students, regular private study sessions should be conducted as part of homework time.
Effective student homework schedules should aim for a balance to allow for family, extracurricular activities, cultural events and employment.
As a guide, students should allow time for completing homework and time for revising the learning from the day.
The guidelines assume that students do homework three-five nights per week, with more time dedicated to homework and revision as each year level progresses.
For Years 7-10, work on weekends and during school holidays should only be necessary if the suggested times are not completed on week nights. In the senior years, these times serve as a guideline; there will be some periods in the year, such as in the lead-up to exams, when more time is required for personal study and revision.
Students are expected to complete, on average, the following amount of homework or study between three to five times a week:
Year 7 Minimum 30 minutes
Year 8 Minimum 45 minutes- 1 ½ hours
Year 9 Minimum 1 hour - 1 ¾ hours
Year 10 Minimum 1 ½ hours - 2 hours
Year 11 Minimum 2 ½ hours -3 hours
Year 12 Minimum 3 hours - 6 hours
It is suggested that students organise and design a homework timetable to manage and balance their commitments.
Another strategy is to use a ‘flexible time management method’, where student commitments that interfere or collide with study or revision sessions are replaced as needed at a more convenient time, meaning that the subjects and content missed out on for any reason are completed. This strategy works best when managed using a weekly planner or diary.
Supports from Surf Coast Secondary College.
Each Year Level at SCSC provides opportunities for supervised “after school catch up sessions” weekly, where students are encouraged to attend when seeking additional support or suitable environments to complete their homework.
More information on these sessions can be found through contacting the relevant Learning Community Leader.
